| A Message from Your Host
"The most important advice I ever received
from a clinical supervisor was to expect my patients to respect
my position as a medical professional instead of being their friend.
Of course, it was important because it opened my eyes to the often
detached medical community around me, and because I ignored it,
realizing that it was what separated me from those whom the patients
didn't trust, and therefore didn't confide in openly -- a barrier
in meeting a patient's healthcare needs. If my patients trusted
me, I knew that ultimately any respect I was due would follow naturally.
For over twenty years, friends, relatives
and most importantly, patients, have asked me a similar question
following an explanation regarding a health-related matter, "Why hasn't anyone explained
it like that to me before?" In both clinical practice and
my work as a freelance writer, communication is essential. My commitment
is to bring some of today's most important national healthcare issues
to the table and to discuss them in an engaging, entertaining fashion
while fostering an ease of understanding."
