“There is no more justified use of our courts than to prosecute those who
abuse and neglect the aging patients they are entrusted to care for.”
Michael D. Carter, Jr.
Attorney, Horwitz, Horwitz & Associates
August 2005,
Illinois Law Firm to Sponsor Outreach on Abuse & Neglect in Nursing Homes; Roberts to Host
I could not agree more with Mr. Carter’s statement.
Fortunately for those who have been abused, neglected, or injured while receiving care in a
nursing home or long-term care environment there are advocates like Michael Carter and others
who don’t side-step the message regarding the unfathomable realities of nursing home abuse with more palatable political correctness.
Instead, he hits the issues, those responsible to protect the aging against abuse, such as local and
state agencies (Health and Human Services), and the industry itself, square between the eyes with
his in-depth medical knowledge, unshakeable understanding of the laws governing licensed
facilities, and his experience advocating for the injured within institutionalized care.
Every now and then an outspoken advocate like me gets a rare opportunity to blend her work with
that of others in an effort to incite meaningful public discussion and long-overdue change. My
introduction to Mr. Carter was one such event.
Teaming with Citizen Action/Illinois, Margaret Neiderer (former ICARE Ombudsman and
recognized expert witness throughout the state of Illinois on nursing home neglect), and Michael
Carter, the law firm of Horwitz, Horwitz & Associates has sponsored a unique online radio
program that is available 24/7.
This special program helps families and loved ones to better understand, a) the questions they
MUST ask when evaluating a nursing home or long-term care facility, b) what to look for in a
facility, c) what to expect in patient care management and when to speak out, and finally, what to
do if they suspect neglect, abuse, or an injury has occurred.
We’ll also discuss what promising
trends are on the horizon and what citizens can do to help change an industry now that has little
incentive to alter its present course.
I hope you’ll join us.
