For millions of Americans suffering from the effects of a chronic or acute illness, any temporary reprieve from illness can mean losing disability benefits, especially if the goal is to lead a more productive lifestyle that includes going back to work.
Patrise Holden learned such a harsh lesson when, despite a progressive and life-long battle with Sickle Cell Aneima, she fought off pain and went to work, earning a meager $9000 in a single year.
But Patrise was not to be denied her benefits and learned through agressive research of a program that would allow her to retain her benefits while also building a dream for a new life.

Thanks to a little known federal grant, Kim Ezell (Legal Services of Northern California) spends her days as an advocate for individuals like Patrise, helping them achieve their goals through information not always easily accessible through representatives of the Social Security & Disabilty Administration.
